Song combining Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’ and Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ wants to save the NHS for Christmas
In 2013 the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir released the song Bridge Over You to mark the 65th anniversary of the NHS. But now, having received 80,000 pledges in opposition to cuts to the NHS, the song has gone viral in an attempt to get the Christmas Number One spot.
Bridge Over You is a mash-up of Coldplay’s Fix You and Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water. It was given its protest zeal by Dr Harriet Nerva, a Junior Doctor from Cambridge, who launched a Facebook campaign to celebrate the NHS and bring attention to cuts made by the Conservative Government, by making Bridge Over You Number One at Christmas.
The campaign says: “The NHS faces a cruel winter ahead. Budget cuts, low staff morale, junior doctors balloting for industrial action, and hospitals up and down the country being classed as ‘inadequate’. We are closer than ever to that cliff edge, but we WILL NOT let the NHS fall.”
