A new Marvin Gaye documentary will hit cinemas next year

The film, which has the approval of the soul legend’s family, will look at the making of ‘What’s Going On’

A new documentary about the making of Marvin Gaye’s classic 1971 album What’s Going On has received the thumbs-up from surviving members of the late soul legend’s family, and is due to go into production later this year, with a theatrical release some time in 2017.

The documentary, entitled Marvin, What’s Going On? will be filmed largely on location in Detroit, Washington and Los Angeles. It will feature contributions from Gaye’s ex-wife Janis and his three children as well as many of his peers from the glory days of Motown, and will also include never-before-seen archive footage and pictures.

The film is being made by Noah Media Group and Greenlight. In a statement, Gaye’s children said: “We are proud that his relevance remains intact, and we look forward to being a part of this cinematic journey. Our father was complex, but we are confident that with Noah Media Group’s attention to detail and their dedication to the truth, the positive, inspirational and aspirational aspects of his life will be handled and shared with the world in a way never seen before.”

There have been several attempts previously to create a Gaye biopic, but all have failed, and his family have expressed their wish that no such film be made.
