Lionel Richie will perform on Sunday at next year’s Glastonbury

Lionel Richie is the first act to be officially announced for next year’s Glastonbury, playing the legendary teatime veteran slot

ionel Richie will make his first ever UK festival appearance at Glastonbury 2015, it has been announced, playing in the now traditional Sunday evening ‘veteran performer’ slot. The booking was confirmed yesterday via Twitter and on the official festival website.

Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis said: “We are over the moon. We’ve had some amazing performances in the Sunday teatime slot over the years, from Neil Diamond, Shirley Bassey, Paul Simon and many others. And, of course, Dolly Parton played an incredible set this year. So we felt very lucky to get the call from a true Motown legend asking to play next year. He’s got so many amazing songs, to see him perform here on the farm is just going to be wonderful.”

Previously, the teatime spot on the Pyramid Stage has featured the likes of Tom Jones and Kenny Rogers. In 2014 Parton was a surprise hit, drawing in the biggest crowd of the entire festival, which launched her into her most successful year ever in the UK, with album Blue Smoke still in the album charts as we write.

On his official Facebook page, Richie said he was “very excited” to play at the world famous event. The full line-up is to be announced in the spring, with the festival itself taking place from 24 to 28 June 2015.
