Joanna Gruesome: every one’s a winner…

Welsh noise prophets fail to be reviled in their native land as they snap up country’s most prestigious music prize

hey’ve been one of our favourite up-and-coming bands for a while here at Songwriting, so we’re delighted to bring you the news that Joanna Gruesome are also this year’s winners of the Welsh Music Prize for their debut album Weird Sister.

The Welsh Music Prize was set up in 2011 by Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens and producer John Rostron, to honour the best music “made in Wales, or by Welsh people around the world”. Previous winners have included Gruff Rhys (for Hotel Shampoo in 2011), Future Of The Left (for The Plot Against Common Sense, 2012) and Georgia Ruth (for Week Of Pines, 2013).

The Cardiff indie/punk/pop five-piece were chosen from a shortlist of 12 albums that also featured long-players by Gruff Rhys, Manic Street Preachers, The People The Poet, The Gentle Good, Slowly Rolling Camera, Samoans, Gulp, Future Of The Left, Euros Childs, 9Bach and Cate Le Bon. They received their award in a ceremony at Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre yesterday.

Huw Stephens said: “A big thanks to our judges who chose Joanna Gruesome’s Weird Sister as the winner. They’ve come a long way and continue to thrive, so a massive congratulations to all involved with Joanna Gruesome!”
