Our second exclusive of the week comes courtesy of a soulful pop songstress who’s drawn comparison to some impressive artists

Yorkshire songwriter Emma King’s career in music has seen her travel across the globe. Taking in countries across Europe and a series of locations in the US, her silky and soulful pop songwriting has won her a legion of fans.

Her career as a songwriter began after she received a scholarship from James Brown’s god-daughter Carleen Anderson (of Brand New Heavies fame) to study at the noted British and Irish Modern Music (BIMM) in Brighton.

That firm grounding gave her the songwriting skills to release her eponymous debut album, a record which has seen King described as a “gifted singer and performer” by Blues Magazine.

Baby You Don’t Mean Nothing showcases her songwriting talent perfectly and speaking of the song King says: “Baby You Don’t Mean Nothing is a song about having everything and nothing all at once. Feeling let down, meeting the end of the road yet standing strong to prepare for change. It’s also about realisation, looking into the mirror and telling yourself you can do this. The chorus’s double negative lyric is intentional. To convey two messages… ‘You don’t mean nothing’.”

Emma King has been compared to Joss Stone, Annie Lennox and Christina Aguilera. We think fans of that illustrious trio will find much to enjoy in Baby You Don’t Mean Nothing and suggest that fans of Adele might want to give this a try too. But why take our word for it? Listen to the track and see what you think…
