Ed Sheeran’s ‘÷’ tops the million mark in under three weeks, with quadruple platinum status looking likely within the month

Having broken every record in known human history by seeing all 16 tracks from his third album, ÷, enter the Top 20 of the UK Singles Chart, further congratulations are in order for Ed Sheeran, after ÷ topped the one million less than three weeks after its release.

Selling at its current rate, ÷ should achieve quadruple platinum status less than a month after its release. While this still leaves Sheeran some way short of the highest selling album of the noughties in the UK, with Adele’s 21 out in front on 4,944,500, it raises the prospect of Sheeran making a spirited challenge for the Tottenham songwriters crown.

Sheeran recently made history by claiming nine of the top ten places in the UK Singles Chart. Speaking of the success, Sheeran said: “I never expected to have nine songs in the top ten ever in my life so yeah, I don’t know, something’s gone wrong. But I’m definitely very, very happy about it.”
