Pupils from five English primary schools are poised to become recording artists after competing in a road safety song contest

Former Yes keyboardist and TV personality Rick Wakeman has helped to launch the recording career of students from five Midlands primary schools in England, after judging the inaugural finals of the DriveSafe & StaySafe road safety song contest.

The competition featured pupils from primary schools across the Midlands, with the aim being to compose a song that would help raise road safety awareness. The finalists were comprised of students from five schools, with Delves Infant School in Walsall winning the competition for their rap song It’s All About Road Safety. So high was the standard, though, that all the finalists were told their songs would be recorded as EPs by professional musicians and video producers from Birmingham-based Goodmedia Ltd.

Alongside the final of the DriveSafe & StaySafe’s road safety song contest, was the launch of the multimedia road safety programme The Conies. The Conies features a family of traffic cones who deliver road and personal safety messages through their comic adventures. The Conies includes a video series, interactive games, teaching-packs and other e-learning resources, all of which were developed using the assistance of pupils and teachers from Solihull Junior School and St Alphege Junior School.

West Midlands Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Yvonne Mosquito said this of The Conies: “The Conies capture the essence of these child-focused campaigns by making road safety fun and stimulating. These entertaining characters will become nationally recognised as a symbol of good practice for children on the roads, and there is no reason why they should not also become a means for delivering safety messages to young people all over the world.”

You can find details of The Conies here, while information on DriveSafe & StaySafe can be found on their website.
