Today’s classic is a gem from one of emo’s guiding lights. We hope you enjoy it as much as us
Back in the early 90s emo took a backseat to the commercial success of grunge. After the untimely death of Kurt Cobain, indie-rock kids were on the hunt for a new hero and Jawbreaker’s Blake Schwarzenbach was only too capable of stepping up to the plate.
Jawbreaker had already released two albums (1990s Unfun and 1992s Bivouac) by the time fans were able to get their hands on 24 Hour Revenge Therapy. The record stands as one of emo’s totemic achievements and remains one of the go-to albums for fans of the genre.
Boxcar is the third track on the LP and provided Jawbreaker with their most well-known song. It’s wonderfully simple, criminally catchy, and features the iconic lyric: “you’re not punk and I’m telling everyone.” This classic sums up why Jawbreaker are emo’s throbbing guts and pulsating lungs.
