Royalty Exchange’s Hot Hitmakers chart: “Songwriters are the lifeblood of the music industry.”

Royalty Exchange introduces a new chart of the month’s 20 most successful songwriters of tracks on the Billboard Hot 100

Denver-based, online music royalties marketplace, Royalty Exchange has announced the introduction of a new chart designed to recognise the songwriters behind America’s biggest hits. Updated monthly, the Hot Hitmakers chart ranks the top 20 songwriters responsible for creating the country’s top songs, by analysing the Billboard Hot 100 and surfacing the composition data behind each track.

The result lists the songwriters in order of their influence on the charts, along with the songs they’ve written and the artists who recorded it. In some instances, the recording artist is also the sole songwriter. In other cases, the recording artist shares credit with one or more songwriters. But it’s also very common for the recording artist to have no writing credit on the track at all.

The first edition, Hot Hitmakers October 2016 saw more than a dozen songwriters who are not the recording artist behind the track, including the likes of Max Martin, Greg Kurstin, Shellback and Scott Harris. It also showcases recording artists who write their own material, led by Tyler Joseph of the band Twenty One Pilots, who penned three tracks that charted in the Hot 100 over the course of the month – he’s one of seven recording artists on the chart credited as the sole songwriter. Taylor Swift makes the October chart thanks to her contributions as a songwriter for her ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris’ track This Is What You Came For.

“Songwriters are the lifeblood of the music industry. Yet historically songwriters have toiled largely outside the mainstream eye, while the performing artist reaped the fame,” explains Royalty Exchange’s Antony Bruno. “We feel songwriters deserve more recognition. The vast majority of the artists we work with are songwriters, who have raised over $3 million through our auctions this year.”
