Craig Finn does his best to convince Doubting Thomas that there is still plenty to live for

Inspired by his friend’s roof, from where he watched 9/11 unfold, Craig Finn’s new single somehow manages to remain hopeful

ewyer’s Roof is the lead single from The Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn’s second solo record Faith In The Future. With the album set for release in September the track does exactly what it is supposed to by increasing impatience for more new material. Inspired by the rooftop where Finn watched the World Trade Centre fall on 9/11, it is a reflection on hope after tragedy and coming through the other side.

Over an understated synth and guitar track, Finn does his best to convince Doubting Thomas that there is still plenty to live for. “Look at these mountains, look at these trees / Tom there must be something you believe,” he implores.

The character in question is undoubtedly Finn himself, looking for the good in life again. Rather than walk away or get lost in a drug-fuelled haze it’s time to look to the future and this strangely soothing tale is a great starting place.

Verdict: A profound tale of hope
