amed after their great-great-great-grandfather Larkin Poe, a distant cousin of Edgar Allen Poe, Kin is the debut album of Atlanta-based sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell and it is an album that gives them the opportunity to present their true selves in all their eccentric glory.

Many different styles and influences can be heard on the album. On the opening two tracks Jailbreak and Don’t, a gritty guitar sound is complimented by an AOR sheen to create something both edgy and accessible. The influence of roots music shines through on Crown Of Fire, Sugar High is a ‘stomp your feet atop a bar’ anthem and the majestic ebb and flow of We Interwine is power pop at its best.

There are also hints of early Bat For Lashes present in both the macabre storytelling and haunting vocals. This is particularly apparent on the ritualistic sounding Dandelion as the sisters sing in covenly unison “gather dirt and weeds for her soul”. The same ominousness works less well on the overly bombastic Elephant, with its repeated chants of “It’s in the room now”.

On Kin, Larkin Poe have brought together a heady brew of styles and stories and created something unique – all held together by the siblings’ sumptuous harmonies.

Verdict: There is no exquisite beauty without some strangeness in the proportion
