EXCLUSIVE! ‘These Walls’ by Nessi Gomes
Our second exclusive this week is from a songwriter who channels the dual folk influences of Portugal and the UK
She may be at the start of her career, but the excellent alt-folk songwriter Nessi Gomes has already performed three sets at Glastonbury Festival and received support from the noted BBC Introducing.
Born on the Island of Guernsey to a family of immigrants from Portugal, Gomes draws together the influence of the Fado folk music with that of the more traditional elements found in the British folk scene.
These Walls is Gomes’ debut single and of the track she says: “I wrote the song at a time of great pressure. It was the beginning of something new and it felt extremely frightening. These Walls are inside of me, inside of us. It is the imagined expectations we project onto ourselves and the outside world.”
She’s drawn comparison with artists such as Kate Bush, Beth Gibbons, Bjork and Joanna Newsom. We also think that followers of the excellent Daughter will find themselves becoming fans of Gomes after hearing These Walls. But don’t take our word for it, give the song a listen and see what you think…
