Husband: protest songs for the 21st Century
Thursday is track exclusive day here at Songwriting. This week’s offering comes from blues-inspired Australian songwriter Husband, AKA Michael Paolino
his week’s exclusive, hear-it-here-first offering comes from Husband, a Perth, Australia-based singer-songwriter known to the taxman as Michael Paolino. The Money, which you can hear and watch below, is the title track from his debut album, due out on 23 January.
“The Money expresses my frustration about how money and happiness are so closely linked for so many people,” says Paolino of the song. “One night I found myself walking through Perth’s financial district. It felt so dead… it’s sole purpose is to make money 9-5. The emptiness I felt inspired this song.”
The Money is only Husband’s second release, coming on the heels of a self-titled debut EP. Like the rest of the album, it’s been produced by Rick Parker, who’s known for his work with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. We think fans of Tom Waits or Nick Cave will be feeling this one particularly, but as ever, you don’t have to take our word for it – you can hear it for yourself…
