It’s a family affair: Ménage

This week’s exclusive first listen comes from a talented trio of Portuguese siblings who are now based in Toronto, Canada

hursday’s track exclusive comes this week from Ménage, AKA the brother-brother-sister outfit of Basilio, Gabriel and Bela Ferreira. Based in Toronto, they describe themselves as a “progressive power-pop trio” and the track which Songwriting proudly premieres tonight is their brand new single, Black And White TV.

The three Ferreiras grew up in Toronto but spent a great deal of time in Portugal, where their relatives still lived. Given musical instruments one Christmas by their parents, all three got involved in music, but separately: Basilio and Gabriel formed a band that supported the likes of Stone Temple Pilots and My Chemical Romance, while Bela embarked on a solo career, recording several singles that went Top 10 in Portugal and received extensive airplay in Europe before becoming a presenter for MTV Portugal.

But fate would eventually see all three siblings reunited in Los Angeles, where Ménage was born in 2012, the year they released their debut album, Ménage, produced by David ‘Smashing Pumpkins’ Bottrill and Ted ‘Coldplay’ Jensen, among others. Since then, they’ve toured extensively across the USA, as well as playing at several major festivals in Portugal and Canada, and their song Our Time Is Now won Best Rock Song Of The Year at the 2014 International Portuguese Music Awards.

Black And White TV is the perfect fusion of their Portuguese and US influences, and to our ears sounds like what you might get if you fused No Doubt with Evanescence and locked them in a room with a stack of fado CDs for a few weeks. But don’t take our word for it…

Wow, haven’t heard this very different and cool acoustic/ambient version – ’cause the original is one of my faves – but this take is excellent! Rock on Ménage! <3
