Ded Rabbit: You’d happily have them round for dinner, just not at your nana’s

This indie-troupe have the energy of a springer spaniel and fizz of a Panda Pop on their new double single

Only Dating / Never Gonna Learn by Ded RabbitThese four Yorkshire brothers – Eugene (vocals, rhythm guitar), Fergus (lead guitar), Donal (bass) and Eoin Gaine (drums) – offer a twin slice of indie magic on their new double single Only Dating / Never Gonna Learn.

Only Dating opens with a lashing of angular riffery and Eugene’s accented vocals, like a slow dance take on The Cribs’ early work. With a chorus that pays faithful homage to the likes of Catfish & The Bottlemen, this is very much a modern indie track with its roots in the origins of the genre.

Never Gonna Learn operates with a quicker pace. The rhythm and percussive sections race towards the conclusion of the song’s 141 seconds, as the guitar line darts in between the two, begging for and demanding your attention, as The Libertines did at their best.

Ded Rabbit have already caught the ear of BBC 6Music’s Steve Lamacq and BBC Radio Scotland’s Vic Galloway and, listening to these two tracks, it’s not hard to see why. The quartet have verve, energy and are imbued with the sort of cheeky pop sentiment that means you’d happily have them round for dinner… just not at your nana’s.

Verdict: Sprightly and pop-glossed indie
