We round-up the last week in music, including news you might’ve missed, our SongsOfTheWeek playlist and Classic Of The Week

W‘re back folks. Have you missed us? We’ve certainly missed you and we can’t wait to fill you in on what we’ve got up to over the last seven days. So, are you ready? Alright then, here goes…

We’ve been intrigued by the bucket list that was found in the changing rooms of a US, Urban Outfitters store; we’ve recoiled at the news that Caffe Cream in Wallasey, Wirral, has begun selling chips with ice cream on; finally, we’ve been impressed and heartened by Roger Federer claiming a record-breaking 8th Wimbledon title. Congratulations, Roger.

Classic Of The Week

‘Daysleeper’ by R.E.M. (1998)

It’s easy to forget just how influential the brilliant US rock group were. As one of the founders of college rock they took independent guitar music firmly into the mainstream and showed that intellect, sincerity, and courage could sell huge numbers of records. Without them there would be no alt-rock, no grunge, a greatly impoverished indie-rock scene and a vastly different musical landscape. Taken from Up, the band’s eleventh studio album and their first without original drummer Bill Berry, this is not the obvious choice. However, Daysleeper was the first single that this writer bought by R.E.M. and it can be thanked for sparking an enduring love of the group. If this is your introduction to R.E.M. then we hope you enjoy them as much as we do.
