Hats off to (Jennifer) Harper

This week’s Thursday track exclusive is a slice of anthemic, lighter-waving Adult Oriented Folk-Rock from New York-based singer-songwriter Jennifer Harper

ome classic-style female singer-songwriter vibes for you in this week’s Thursday track exclusive, which comes from New York-based Jennifer Harper. We Belong Together is taken from her forthcoming second EP All The Love, on which she’s worked with some heavy-hitting session musicians whose collective CVs take in everyone from Stevie Wonder and Madonna to Billy Idol, Ofra Haza and Simple Minds, as well as with an 11-piece string ensemble.  The EP has been produced by Tal Bergman and Haim Cotton.

Jennifer herself was raised in Washington DC and studied classical piano as a child, while teaching herself to play songs by The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel and Cat Stevens. Alt-rock and reggae formed the backbone of her teenage listening, during which time she moved to NYC to study at Barnard College, but as an artist she cites the likes of Annie Lennox, Chrissie Hynde and Tracy Chapman as her biggest influences.

Of We Belong Together, Jennifer says: “I flew out to LA to record this song with Tal Bergman. I was in such a powerfully happy place in my life, bringing on all of these incredible musicians, realising a dream. But after we recorded the tracks, I felt the lyrics weren’t right. I wanted to communicate more joy, hope and confidence… that sense of ‘We’re going to make it baby, no matter what’. That’s how I was feeling about my situation at the time and I wanted to let it out! There was my chorus.”

The hype sheet for this one makes comparisons to Carole King, Carly Simon and Sheryl Crow, but as ever, you can make your own mind up…
