The shortlist of potential inductees next year includes Pearl Jam and Tupac Shakur who only just became eligible for nomination

Nominations for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017 were announced this week. Acts on the ballot for the first time include Depeche Mode, Electric Light Orchestra, Jane’s Addiction, Joan Baez, Journey, Steppenwolf and Bad Brains, along with Pearl Jam and Tupac Shakur who both became eligible for nomination this year. The remaining list of nominees are Chaka Khan, Chic, J. Geils Band, Janet Jackson, Joe Tex, Kraftwerk, MC5, The Cars, The Zombies and Yes.

To be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination – 2017’s nominees had to release their first recording no later than 1991. Factors such as an artist’s musical influence on other artists, length and depth of career and the body of work, innovation and superiority in style and technique are taken into consideration.

All inductees are ultimately represented in Cleveland’s Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame – the nonprofit organization that tells the story of rock and roll’s global impact via special exhibits, educational programs and its library and archives.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2017 inductees will be announced in December 2016 and the ceremony itself will be held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn in April 2017. Venue and ticket information is yet to be announced, but HBO has been confirmed as the event’s broadcaster.

Fans have the opportunity to officially participate in the induction selection process, beginning 18 October and continuing through 11:59 p.m. EST on 5 December 2016. The top five artists, as selected by the public, will comprise a ‘fans’ ballot’ that will be tallied along with the other ballots to choose the 2017 inductees.
